
I didn’t see books that had people who looked like me,” she said, referring to Hart School. Another five books, including three early reader titles through Scholastic, are planned for publication by the end of 2023.įor Bolling, representation is a big part of her work, as her stories are inhabited by mostly Black and brown characters. Since then, she has sold eight books.Ī follow-up to “Together We Ride” titled “Together We Swim” is slated to be released next year. Three months after that, she signed with an agent. Her first title, “Let’s Dance,” which celebrates dances from around the world, was released in early 2020. In the last two years, interest in her books has only grown. “For me, it was my salvation, it was a balm, it was what I had to grab onto to, so I could just get lost in my writing,” she said. In fact, Bolling was prolific during the pandemic, churning out story after story. The bicycle book was not her only input over the last two years. “I like to write joyful books and books about community and connection and so I thought, ‘This is really great, why don’t I write a book about learning to ride a bike?’” Bolling said. When Bolling went for walks with her husband around their home in Westover, they spotted the girl slowly getting better.

She was inspired by witnessing a girl in her neighborhood learning to ride a bike.

Students also had the opportunity to order the book and have it signed by her.īolling wrote “Together We Ride” in the early days of the pandemic. “We are thrilled that she volunteered her time to share her love of reading and writing with our kindergarten and first grade students, celebrating diversity and culture,” she said.īolling gifted copies of her books to the school.

Maria Guzda, teacher leader for student support at Hart, is Bolling’s neighbor and friend. Bolling has spent about three decades as an educator in Greenwich, first as an elementary teacher, then a middle school English teacher and most recently as an instructional coach, working with teachers in grades 6 through 12 - new and seasoned - and helping them improve their craft and student outcomes.
